The drivetrain. On air rowers this means the chain, sprocket, and fan bearings; on magnetic and water rowers it means the flywheel and transmission. Ask what the drive components are made of and whether they are sealed. Chain-driven air rowers need a quality chain that resists stretching, and the whole drivetrain should be serviceable with common tools.
Weight capacity and frame rigidity. A commercial rower should carry members up to 150 kg without flexing. If the frame twists when a heavy member rows hard, it will loosen over time and feel worse every month. Test for rigidity before you buy, and check the published max user weight.
