That locking mechanism is the whole point. With a free barbell, failing a squat means bailing the bar backward or dumping it on safety pins. With a smith machine, you stop the bar anywhere in the range of motion, hook it, and step out. No spotter required.

Why Gyms Put a Smith Machine on the Floor
The machine earns its floor space for reasons that have nothing to do with replacing free weights:

None of these mean the smith machine is “better” than free weights. It’s a different tool, and knowing what it’s for — and what it isn’t for — is the difference between using it well and using it badly.
Where the Critics Are Right
The machine’s main criticism is legitimate: the fixed bar path is not the path your body naturally wants to move. A free barbell squat lets your hips drift back and the bar stay over mid-foot. A smith machine forces the bar to travel on rails, so your feet and torso have to adapt to the machine’s line, not the other way around. Done carelessly, that can put extra shear stress on knees and lower back.
It also trains less. Because the rails handle balance, your stabilizer muscles work less than they would under a free barbell. Nobody should learn to squat exclusively on a smith machine and then walk over to a loaded free barbell expecting the same feel.
None of this makes the machine unsafe. It makes improper setup unsafe — which is why the setup rules below matter.
How to Use a Smith Machine Safely
The safety of the machine is mechanical. Your safety is behavioral. Follow this sequence every time, and the machine does its job.
Before You Load Anything
- Set the bar at a height where you can unrack it with your knees slightly bent and your back braced — roughly upper-thigh level for squats, arm’s length above the chest for bench press.
- Test the hook mechanism with an empty bar. On most machines you twist the bar backward to engage the hooks and forward to release, but the direction varies by brand — check the instruction sticker if there is one. The bar should move smoothly and lock positively. If it feels sticky or the hooks look worn, tell the staff — that’s a maintenance issue, not a you issue.
- Place a bench or set up your stance before loading plates, not after.
Squat Setup: Feet Forward, Not Under the Bar
This is the setup mistake we see most. With a free barbell your feet sit under the bar. On a smith machine, the bar travels straight down, so if your feet are directly under it, your knees drive forward past your toes as you descend, and your lower back rounds at the bottom.
Fix it: step forward 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) so your heels are ahead of the bar line. Then squat normally — hips back, knees tracking over toes, chest up. The bar will travel down in front of your center of gravity, which is what you want. Experiment with stance distance until the bottom of your squat feels natural, not forced.
Bench Press Setup: Position the Bench, Then the Bar
Lie down and position the bench so the bar lowers to your lower-to-mid chest — roughly sternum level on angled machines, a touch higher on vertical ones — never your neck or shoulders. Face the direction of the rails’ tilt so the bar moves down and slightly back toward you, matching a natural press. Set the hooks one or two positions above your full lockout so you can re-rack without a full arm extension struggle.
The Rack: Twists, Not Drops
To end a set, rotate the bar (usually backward — same direction you tested in setup) until it engages the hooks, then let it settle. Do this at the top of a rep or when you can control the bar — don’t try to hook it mid-lift with a tilted bar. And never let the bar drop onto the hooks from height; that’s how frames and hooks get damaged, and it startles everyone nearby.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Feet under the bar on squats — forces knees forward and rounds the lower back at depth.
- Bench positioned wrong — the bar hits the neck or shoulders instead of the chest. Set up before you load.
- Bouncing the bar off the safety hooks — control the descent; the hooks are an emergency stop, not a bounce pad.
- Loading max weight to “test” the machine — the machine doesn’t make you stronger overnight; it just removes balance from the equation.
- Ignoring the click — always confirm the bar is hooked before you let go or step away.
- Using it for everything — if you can safely use free weights, keep them in your program; the smith machine is a complement, not a replacement.
