Ask which zones have tight spacing. If a quote doesn’t mention hole spacing at all, assume it’s wide-spaced and check for yourself.

3. Safety Bars and J-Hooks: The Parts That Save People

  • Safety bars (pin safeties): must be rated for the rack’s full load capacity. Check that they’re solid steel or heavy-gauge tube, not thin hollow bar
  • J-hooks: look for rubber or UHMW plastic lining on the contact points — bare metal hooks chew up your barbell knurling over time
  • Hook depth: shallow hooks let the bar slide off when racking at an angle; deep, angled hooks keep the bar seated
