Buying spinning bikes for a commercial studio is a different game from buying a bike for your living room, and the specs that matter are not the ones on the Amazon listing. If you’re shopping for a studio or gym floor, the short version is this: look for a flywheel of at least 18 kg (40 lb), belt drive, a steel frame rated for daily commercial use, resistance that survives heavy sweat, and a manufacturer that puts the EN957 / ISO 20957 duty rating in writing. Skip any of those and you’re buying a home bike with a studio price tag. Why Most “Spinning Bikes” on Amazon Aren’t Commercial

The word “commercial” gets thrown around so loosely that it’s basically meaningless on most product pages. A true commercial indoor cycling bike is engineered for a specific reality: 10 to 30 riders a day, hour after hour, riders who stand on the pedals, sweat on the frame, and slam the resistance knob around mid-class. That usage profile kills cheap bikes in weeks, not years.

Flywheel Weight: The Spec Everyone Obsesses Over

Flywheel weight is the most-quoted number in indoor cycling, and for good reason — it drives the feel of the ride. The flywheel stores momentum, which smooths out the pedal stroke. Light flywheels feel jerky and stop dead when you ease off; heavy ones spin smoothly through the dead spots.

For commercial use, 18 kg (40 lb) is the floor, and 20–25 kg (44–55 lb) is the sweet spot that most studio operators prefer. Heavier isn’t automatically better. A 25 kg flywheel is harder on the drivetrain and costs more to ship, but anything under 18 kg will feel “home gym” to your members, and they will notice.

One thing to check: some brands quote flywheel weight including the perimeter weight ring, others quote the total rotating mass. Ask for the spec in writing and compare like for like.

Belt Drive vs Chain Drive

Belt drive is the standard for commercial indoor cycling now, and there’s a reason.

  • Quieter. A Kevlar-reinforced belt runs almost silent. In a class with 20 bikes, that’s the difference between a professional soundscape and a garage.
  • Zero maintenance. Belts don’t need lubrication. Chains need oiling, tensioning, and eventual replacement.
  • Smoother feel. Belts flex and damp vibration; chains transmit every mechanical hiccup.

The only place chain drive still makes sense is the very cheapest end of the market, where price beats everything. For a studio, insist on belt drive and a sealed drivetrain. Also check the crank: commercial bikes should use sealed cartridge bottom brackets, not the loose ball bearings found in budget bikes.

Resistance: Felt Pad vs Magnetic

Two systems dominate indoor cycling: friction (felt pad) and magnetic.

Felt pad resistance is the classic spinning setup: a pad presses against the flywheel and you adjust pressure with a knob. It gives that authentic, fine-grained resistance feel that many instructors and members love, and it’s cheap to service. The downsides: pads wear out (typically every 6–18 months in heavy use, and they’re a $10–20 part), and they generate heat and dust.

Magnetic resistance uses magnets that move closer to or further from the flywheel. It’s maintenance-free, silent, and gives consistent resistance without pad wear. The feel is slightly different. Some riders describe it as less “grippy,” and the magnets lose a little strength over years, though slowly.

For a commercial studio, either works. Our recommendation: felt pad if you want the classic spinning class feel and have someone who can swap pads, magnetic if you want the lowest possible maintenance and run unsupervised hours. Whatever you choose, make sure the resistance mechanism is shielded from sweat. Corrosion from sweat is the number one killer of resistance systems we see in warranty claims.

Frame, Adjustability and Rider Fit

A spinning bike gets ridden hard, standing, in all directions. Frame quality is not cosmetic.

  • Steel thickness and welds. Commercial frames use heavy-gauge steel with reinforced joints. Look for a max user weight of 150 kg (330 lb) or more. That’s a reliable proxy for frame strength even if you never have a 150 kg member.
  • Adjustability range. Seat height, seat fore-aft, and handlebar height should all adjust over a wide range, ideally tool-free. A studio’s membership spans 150 cm to 200 cm riders. Check the actual ranges, not the marketing copy.
  • Q-factor. This is the distance between the pedals. Too wide and riders get knee discomfort over a 45-minute class. Commercial bikes generally run a narrower Q-factor (~150–170 mm) than cheap home bikes. Worth asking about; few buyers do.
  • Pedals and cleats. Commercial bikes should ship with dual-sided pedals (SPD + toe cage) so members can ride in cycling shoes or trainers.

Commercial Certification and Warranty

This is where you separate real commercial equipment from painted-up home equipment.

  • EN957-5 / ISO 20957-5: These are the European standards for stationary training equipment, with class S (studio) and class H (home) duty ratings. A bike certified class S is designed for supervised group use. Ask for the certificate. A factory-direct supplier should have it on file and be happy to share it.
  • Warranty terms: Commercial buyers should get 3–5 years on the frame and 1–3 years on parts. If a supplier only offers 12 months on a bike destined for group classes, that’s them telling you how long they expect it to last.
  • Spare parts availability: Ask what the lead time is on pads, belts, and knobs. A studio bike that’s down for three weeks waiting on a felt pad is costing you class revenue every single day.

Buying Direct: What Changes When You Order From a Factory

Most studios buy through distributors, but more operators are going factory-direct, and the math is worth understanding. When you buy direct from a manufacturer like us, you’re removing 2–3 layers of markup. That’s why a commercial-grade bike that retails for $1,500 can land in your studio for a fraction of that when ordered in container quantities. The trade-offs: longer lead times (typically 30–60 days), minimum order quantities (usually a 20- or 40-foot container), and you handle import logistics yourself or with a freight forwarder.

The factory-direct conversation should cover four things: your exact spec (flywheel, drive, resistance, console), your branding (many factories offer OEM/ODM, and we can put your logo on the frame and console), the spare parts kit that ships with the container, and the warranty terms in the contract.
